Adult Ministry

Older-Wiser-Loving-Life - Adult Ministry At Northwood

O.W.L.L.S., Northwood’s Adult Ministry, reaches out to senior citizens through four prongs or specialized areas of ministry. Fellowship and Fun, under the guidance of Bev Grounds, is already planning day trips and other special events. Financial and Legal Matters are handled by Blanche Ryan, who will get help and information she can’t provide herself. Linda Iverson is in charge of arranging Programs on and Help with Personal Needs. Sally Johnson provides small group studies on Personal and Spiritual Growth as well as time for any seniors who simply want to come in and talk about whatever. These four persons, along with Charlotte Canaday, Jane and Jay Maust, and Jean Longway, who represent different age groups in the older population of the church, form the Older Adult Ministries Council. The council meets on the last Monday of every month to plan future programs and activities and evaluate on-going and past programs.

Associate For Older Adult Ministry Available For Pastoral Counseling

By Sally Johnson

I plan to be in my office at the church, God willing, every Wednesday between 9 and 5 and invite any of you who are lonely, who have a problem or a decision you want to talk about, or simply want to visit, to come see me. I know that often people who live alone or do not have family members nearby sometimes have decisions to make or problems to deal with and would simply like to talk things over with another person, someone whom you can trust to keep whatever you say in confidence, someone who will listen and ask questions without judging you or telling you what to do. Sometimes you feel the pastor is so busy and your needs so relatively unimportant that you don’t want to take his time. Still, you wish you had somebody to talk with. I am offering to be that “somebody.”

Sometimes you may not even have a problem. You’d just like to talk about God and your experience of or relationship with God with someone who will take you seriously and not make judgments about how you pray – or don’t pray – , how you feel close to – or distant from – God. Again, I want to be that “someone.”

I do recommend that you call before you come so that you won’t have to wait to see me in case someone is already there. I also will be glad to make “home visits” to those unable to come to the church. Please call me at the church on Wednesdays or at my home (828-6122) to set up a time for me to come.
